iRacing.com?s 2011 Season 1 Honor Roll

After a dozen weeks of world-class sim racing, 2011 Season 1 is officially in the books. There were more winners than ever before. No doubt the continuing growth in the number of iRacing cars and series had much to do with that but, also, with 25,000+ members the sim racers who once made a habit of collecting lots of hardware each season are finding it harder and harder to score big in multiple series. But don?t tell that to New York?s Chris Hughson, a man on a multi-tasking, multi-class mission in Season 1. For starters, Hughson took first place in both racing and time trials in the Pontiac Solstice class of the inRacingNews Challenge, besting Nenad Matijevic and Chris Wiggins in racing and Wiggins and Oleg Predko in TT. However, [...]

100-year-old NASCAR fan drives NHMS - Click above to watch the video after the jump

We're not the biggest NASCAR fans in the world, but we can't think of a much better way to celebrate a 100th birthday than with a few laps around New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Rachel Gilbert, a NASCAR follower since the 1960s, took five live laps around the speedway in a Toyota Camry pace car. Ms. Gilbert, we salute you.

The great grandmother of nine never passed 50 miles per hour, but she seemed pretty darn pleased with her shot at NASCAR glory. The good people at the speedway also gave Gilbert VIP tickets to the July Spring Cup and a shirt signed by Carl Edwards. Hit the jump to watch video of Gilbert as she cruises around NHMS.

Ford head honcho Mulally talks tech with The Engadget Show

Ford CEO Alan Mulally
Alan Mulally on The Engadget Show - Click above to watch video after the jump

If you aren't already an avid follower of The Engadget Show, we highly recommend checking out the video series. The editors of our favorite tech site (disclosure: Engadget and Autoblog are both owned by AOL) routinely sit down with the movers and shakers of the electronics and gadget world for a look into what's new and what's next. The latest episode delves into everything from a hybrid version of the Shredder to the BlackBerry PlayBook. Of course, we're a little more interested in the show's interview with Ford CEO Alan Mulally. Engadget caught up with Mulally while he was in New York for the 2011 New York Auto Show and picked his brain on the future of the electric car and Ford's vision for the automobile moving forward.

Like most manufacturers, Ford is currently working to develop new battery technologies that will allow for quicker charge times, though Mulally says that his company also hopes to see the electric car become a more integral part of the electrical grid as a whole in the near future. As battery technology advances, Ford wants EVs to be able to charge on off-peak hours, store energy and feed it back to homes and businesses when not in use.

Pretty clever.

Zagato unveils new TZ3 Stradale with the heart of a Viper and the soul of an Alfa

Zagato TZ3 Stradale
Zagato TZ3 Stradale - Click above for high-res image gallery

Less than a month after the news broke that Zagato was working on a new TZ3 Stradale, the Milanese carrozzeria has unveiled the first photos and details of its latest creation.

The sumptuous TZ3 Stradale is part of a continuous celebration by Zagato of Alfa Romeo's centenary. So it's based on an Alfa, then? Well, not quite. Its underpinnings are actually much more serpentine than even the snake on the Alfa badge, borrowed as they are from the all-conquering Dodge Viper ACR, over which is draped a bespoke carbon fiber body. You can discern some key Zagato design elements from its similarity to the Perana Z-One (that's no bad thing) and the classic Kamm tail. But while this coachbuilt Viper doesn't borrow any mechanical bits from the marque to which it pays tribute, its design puts a decidedly contemporary spin on decades of collaboration between Zagato and Alfa Romeo.

The fourth model in the TZ line, the Stradale follows the original TZ and TZ2, and the more recent TZ3 Corsa which was unveiled last year at Villa d'Este - the same location where, as we recently reported, an original TZ is set to cross the auction block. But while the Alfa-powered TZ3 Corsa was a strict one-off track car, the TZ3 Stradale (as previewed in Zagato's christmas card) will be built in an edition of nine examples.

The first is going to noted American collector Eric King, the second and third examples already earmarked for customers in Japan and Europe. Ask really nicely and maybe one of the remaining six can be yours. Otherwise, you'll have to settle for perusing our high-resolution image gallery below and scoping out the official press release after the jump.

Bye, Jr Wins Charlotte ITZR Trucks Series Race

The InTheZoneRacing.com Truck Series took to the iRacing.com version of the Charlotte Motor Speedway for race number five in the 14 race inaugural season. 24 sim racers posted times in qualifying with first time ITZR racers Chris Keogh of Illinois and David Rattler filling-out the front row, with subsequently Keogh jumping to an early lead around the 1.5 mile high-banked speedway at the green flag. Still no pattern to strategy ? Massa

Formula 1 teams are still unsure about the best tyre strategy to win races - despite now having had three races to get more understanding of the tactics needed. That is the view of Ferrari's Felipe Massa, who reckons that teams still need more time to work out how to approach race weekends, and choose the right strategy for Sundays. In China last weekend, Massa was firmly in the hunt for a podium finish on a two-stop strategy but his tyres went off right at the end of the race - and he slipped back to sixth by the chequered flag

Volkswagen earns $2.5B in rock-solid first quarter

2011 VW Jetta logo

Volkswagen
has announced very impressive first quarter profits of €1.7 billion ($2.5 billion USD based on current exchange rates). That's more than three times the profit the Volkswagen Group earned in the first quarter of 2010, as revenue climbed 31 percent to €37.5 billion ($55 billion USD.). Profit from ongoing operations came in at an even more impressive €2.91 billion ($4.26 billion USD). In total, VW managed to move a record two million vehicles in the quarter, up 14 percent versus Q1 2010.

A big reason for VW's stellar sales is the automaker's continued success in China, where deliveries were up 20 percent on the quarter. VW says that it made €557 million ($817 million) from Chinese operations.

A 14 percent increase in global Audi sales also helped the bottom line, bringing in €1.1 billion ($1.6 billion). The Volkswagen Group reports Audi sales of 374,000 vehicles for the quarter. Interestingly, Audi brought in the same amount of money as the larger Volkswagen brand, which also brought in €1.1 billion.

VW has been spending big to expand and improve its lineup, but the German automaker's profits have helped keep the cash coffers stocked. The automaker currently has €19.6 billion in liquid cash ($29 billion in U.S. dollars), up €1 billion from the end of 2010. Hit the jump to read over the VW press release.

Petersen Museum secures $100,000,000 donation

Every year, more than 150,000 folks stroll through the halls of the Petersen Automotive Museum. The crowds have been coming to the Los Angles auto-institution since 1994, when the doors were first opened. And it looks like those doors will remain open for many years to come thanks to a very large donation by Margie Petersen and the Margie and Robert E. Petersen Foundation. When we say "large" we mean it, because Mrs. Petersen just handed over $100,000,000 to the Petersen Museum Foundation.

Now, before you jump out of your seat because of all those zeros, we have to explain a bit more about that figure. This $100,000,000 donation is comprised of the 300,000 square foot building, cars that were part of Robert E. Petersen's personal collection, an undisclosed influx of cash (described as a "substantial unrestricted financial gift") and a "matching challenge."

We wanted to find out a little more with regards to just how this $100 million donation breaks down. A quick call to Buddy Pepp, Executive Director of the Petersen Automotive Musuem, helped shed some light on the matter. While Mr. Pepp could not disclose the exact amount of the cash gift they're receiving, he did say that value is "enormous." He went on to state that it's "breathtaking" and will "enable us to do all the things we've wanted or need to do. It will catapult us to a world-renowned status. This donation will allow us to fulfill Bob Petersen's vision." Not only that, the "matching challenge" will make sure that the directing board keeps pushing to help the museum continue to grow.

We were hoping to get to the juicy details, and hear an exact figure, but it's good to know that the Petersen Museum is going to allow people of all ages to get a glimpse of automobiles from all eras. In fact, the total number of vehicles being donated from Petersen's private stock is 135, and that includes a handful of motorcycles as well. It's an incredibly generous gift from a couple that already give to many other groups and charities.
