Official: FIA confirms 1.6-liter turbo V6 F1 engines for 2014
Filed under: Motorsports, Technology
Formula One racing engines have been dropping cylinders like advanced trigonometry classes over the past couple of decades. The V12s gave way to V10s in the mid 90s. Those were replaced in turn by the current V8s in 2006, and now it's been confirmed that by 2014 two more cylinders will drop off the block for V6 propulsion.
Confirmation comes from the FIA, whose World Motor Sport Council adopted via fax vote the suggestion put forth by the Formula One Commission after consultation with the teams. The new regulations will take effect in 2014 instead of the four-cylinder formula that was set to take hold in 2013.
Displacement will drop as well from 2.4 liters to 1.6, but don't expect a big drop in performance, as the lost cylinders will be replaced by a turbocharger. The overall package, then, marks a little bit of history repeating. Until they were dropped in 1989, many of the cars on the grid were powered by 1.5-liter turbocharged V6 engines (like the '84-spec Honda unit pictured above), although this time they'll be coupled to a new Energy Recovery System that will replace the current Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). Official announcement after the jump.

Report: Chrysler to take next-gen Viper back to Le Mans?
Filed under: Motorsports, Chrysler, Dodge, Racing
Mending a rift in motor racing is good for everybody. It was good for American open-wheel racing when the Champ Car and IndyCar Series put aside their differences to rejoin forces. And it will be good for sports car racing now that the FIA and the ACO are in the same corner.
Just as Indy is set to grow with new manufacturers participating, so is it expected of the new FIA World Endurance Championship. Toyota is one of the major automakers reportedly working on a new LMP1 program, and now reports indicate that the Chrysler Group could be preparing to rejoin endurance racing with a competition version of the upcoming next-generation Viper.
As you may recall, the original Viper bred the GTS-R that claimed overall wins in the Nürburgring 24 Hours and Rolex 24 at Daytona. It also scored back-to-back class wins at Le Mans in 1998, '99 and 2000, Sebring in 2000 and numerous others, including several titles in the FIA GT Championship and American Le Mans Series.
In bringing the next Viper back into the fold, Chrysler would look to challenge the likes of the Chevrolet Corvette C6.R, BMW M3 GT2 and Ferrari 458 GTC in the GTE category. That last bit would be particularly interesting, as the two companies are now corporate cousins under the Fiat umbrella.
The automaker has reportedly brought Riley Technologies, the chassis manufacturer behind eight years running of Grand Am champions, to evaluate the new Viper for competition potential. We'll be watching to see how this development unfolds.

Video: EVO drags the 911 Turbo S, McLaren MP4-12C, Ferrari 458, Noble M600
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Europe, Videos, Porsche, Ferrari, UK, MISC
Americans seem to be uniquely obsessed with drag racing in a straight line as a means of measuring automotive performance, but when British magazine EVO decided to line up the latest set of ultra-fast exotic machinery, not a single piece of American iron was present.
Not that we have any complaints about EVO's chosen group of supercars. Representing Italy is the Ferrari 458, and from Germany hails the Porsche 911 Turbo S. These two traditional power players are matched up against the best Britain has to offer; namely the McLaren MP4-12C and Noble M600.
Now that the players have been established, naturally we all want to know which was the quickest. Not surprisingly, the results were dependent on the distance measured just as much as they were by the vehicles themselves. We won't spoil the ending for you, but we will say that it was close and that you should never count out the underdog. Check out the action in the video after the break.

Followup: Kia disavows sexy cartoon ads
Kia is putting some distance between itself and the racy ads for the company's dual-zone climate control on the Sportage. According to the automaker, the sultry print ads were penned by the Brazilian ad agency Moma. Apparently, Kia Motors America has no business relationship with the company and didn't approve the print ads in any way. The manufacturer called the clever spots "undoubtedly inappropriate" in a short release. Despite disavowing any association with the marketing company that created the spots, the KMA statement goes on to apologize to anyone who may have been offended by the materials.
The ads featured children's tales in two temperatures, with a safe, cool telling of the stories in the left panels, and a more heated variant to the right. You can check them out for yourself in the gallery below. The art was reportedly displayed at a festival in Cannes, though we wouldn't expect to see them resurface stateside anytime soon. Hit the jump to read KMA's official statement on the ads.

Video: First promos released for SPEED's The Car Show, hosts talk about their first cars
Filed under: Etc., Videos, Celebrities, Humor
SPEED has released the first volley of promos for its upcoming Top Gear U.S.A. rival, The Car Show with Adam Carolla. While one of the videos gives us a quick glimpse into what the show will bring to the table when it debuts next month, the rest introduce us to the program's four hosts. Each of the guys take time to tell us about their very first vehicles and driving experiences, from a Honda 400 Four in the case of Adam Carolla to multiple pilfered rides in the case of Dan Neil.
It's clear that each of the guys have a penchant for all things automotive, and there are some pretty entertaining personalities in the bunch. The Car Show hits the air on July 13, so we'll have to wait awhile before we can say with any finality whether Carolla, Neil, Matt Farah and John Salley make for more lively hosts than the Top Gear U.S.A. three musketeers. Hit the jump to check out the videos for yourself.

Carstache proudly presents the Glorystache
Filed under: Aftermarket, Etc., Humor
The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and that means that a volley of stars-and-stripes themed consumer goods are locked, loaded and headed for your nearest big-box store. But while your neighbors will likely have more red, white and blue napkins, balloons, paper plates and leisurewear than you can shake an unread copy of the Constitution at, odds are they won't have one of these on their motor home. Behold the Glorystache, a giant creeper mustache soaked in America and trimmed in red fringe. It almost brings tears to our eyes.
The Glorystache's creators are more than a little tongue-in-cheek about their invention. Carstache, the Glorystache's San Francisco-based inventor, proudly says that the patriotic automotive facial hair has been inducted into the Absurd Automotive Accessory Hall of fame alongside classics like fake bullet holes and spinner rims.
The company's site even features an image of honest Abe Lincoln brandishing a Glorystache in one hand and an AR-15 in the other while riding a Grizzly Bear. We're certain the image isn't altered in any way. Head over to the Carstache website for more information.

2011 Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Practice Day 3 sets the running order
Filed under: Motorsports
This morning, the Unlimited Class cars headed for the bottom portion of Pikes Peak, the sole remaining part of the course that still contains unpaved roads. The three-plus miles of dirt will be paved over before next year's race, and since we'll be spending race day at the finish line, this is the last time we'll ever see the race cars run on the dirt. Sad.
The practice session on the bottom third of the course also serves as a qualifying time, which determines the starting order at the official race. The top qualifier can choose to go first or last in his class. Why is this important? With the ever-changing weather at Pikes Peak, a few minutes can mean the difference between good and bad weather. Last year, Monster Tajima elected to go first, leaving Rhys to deal with the snow that started falling just a few minutes later at the top of the mountain.
While Tajima hasn't been in his usual dominant form during the practice days, he crushed the competition in today's qualifying, beating his closest competitor, Rhys Millen, by 15 seconds. Dallenbach qualified just one second behind Millen, and Jean Philippe Dayraut was another ten seconds back in his Dacia Duster. Even so, the race could be anyone's come Sunday. Millen, whose car is set up more for the fast pavement sections, put in a time 15 seconds faster than Monster on the top section, and the two were nearly equal in the middle portion of the course. Dallenbach can't be counted out, either, as he's been nearly dead even with Millen throughout the week.
Rod Millen looks to be the close favorite in the 2WD Time Attack class, edging out his close friend Jeff Zwart by a second and a half during today's qualifying. Millen's Hyundai Genesis was far faster on yesterday's practice session, however, topping Zwart's Porsche 911 GT2 RS by thirteen seconds.
Stephan Verdier will be the man to beat in 4WD Time Attack. He piloted his highly modified Subaru Impreza WRX STI to the top qualifying spot, five seconds faster than David Kern's Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.
For a full list of practice and qualifying times, head over to www.ppihc.com.
Check back Sunday afternoon for the final race results and to see if the ten-minute barrier will finally be broken at Pikes Peak. Until then, as always, check out our live photos from today in the gallery below.
