Ecclestone: Channel 5 an F1 option

Bernie Ecclestone has said that he would likely approach Channel 5 first if the BBC elects not to extend it deal to cover Formula 1. The BBC's current contract to broadcast grand prix racing finishes at the end of 2012, and there has been speculation that budget cuts at the company could make it unable to commit beyond then - or even exit its contract a year early. Study: What $1 rise in price of gas can do to your SUV's value

According to a new study by Automotive Lease Guide, fuel prices play a huge role in how much your vehicle depreciates over time.No surprise there, but the specifics of the study are a little jarring all the same. USA Today reports that the study found that when gas costs increase by a single dollar, less efficient, large SUVs see their value stumble by a whopping 13 percent. On the other hand, that same rise in fuel prices will cause the value of more fuel efficient models to increase by 10 percent. Of course, as the report notes, those figures only hold true for vehicles on the polar ends of the fuel economy scale.

For full-size sedans and compact SUVs, fuel prices have effectively no impact on resale value whatsoever. ALG says it expects fuel prices to remain close to $3.65 per gallon throughout the remainder of this year. By 2016, however, the price may increase to $4.06 by 2016, just before more stringent fuel economy standards kick in for the first time. Report: Ralph Gilles: SRT model for upcoming C-segment car "absolutely paramount"

First comes word that a Magnum revival could be in the works, and now we hear that the SRT team over at Dodge is eager to add a C-segment brawler to its revitalized product lineup. That word doesn't come from the mouth of just anyone either, as Ralph Gilles, President and CEO of the SRT brand, tells Ward's Auto that it's "absolutely paramount" to add a sports compact to the family.

Dodge is already working on the non-SRT version, and it is expected to be underpinned by the platform currently employed on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. While a Hemi is highly unlikely for the upcoming compact SRT, we wouldn't rule out the idea of a turbocharged four- or six-cylinder engine.

The diehards at Club4AG have been patiently waiting for a new generation of sports car from Toyota. It seems one of the sites founding members got a closer look at what's in store for the production version of the Toyota FT-86 II/Scion FR-S. User Moto-P got the chance to attend a dinner meeting with chief project engineer Tetsuya Tada, and it sounds like many a bean was spilled.

It's apparent from Moto-P's time spent with Tada that the upcoming vehicle is designed to be a true sports car, for true enthusiasts. The engine has been tuned by Yamaha to produce inspiring sounds. Racers will appreciate the space left on either side of the dash, which is there to accommodate a rollcage without also requiring that you cut up the dashboard. There's even a chance the car will come sans CD player and navigation unit to keep things light and simple in the cabin, yet an iPod connection would still be offered.

Moto-P goes on to express his love for the brand, the main engineer and the upcoming car itself. It's clear that this person is a huge fan, so we take everything said in the forum with a grain of salt. Still, it's interesting to hear about what may be in store for the long-awaited FT-86/Toyobaru.

Report: Google Street View cars helping to rebuild quake-ravaged Japan

Upon their initial arrival in Japan, privacy concerns led many citizens to view Google's Street View cars with great skepticism. PCWorld reports, however, that in the wake of the March, 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and tsunami, that mentality is fading.

As Japan works to rebuild the areas devastated by the twin natural disasters, Street View cars are providing valuable assistance. Not only are they being used to document quake-damaged neighborhoods, they're also tracking the progress in those areas as they are repaired.

Once unwanted, Google's all-seeing technology is now playing an important role in Japan, one that's being met with appreciation instead of distrust.

Report: 2012 Lexus GS to debut at Pebble Beach

Well, that was fast. Just days ago, we got our first glimpse of the next-generation Lexus GS out testing on the Nürburgring, and now, AutoGuide reports that the production car is set to debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in Monterey, California next month. Lexus has yet to confirm this report.

Not surprisingly, the 2012 GS will take many of its styling cues from the Lexus LF-Gh concept that bowed at the 2011 New York Auto Show in April. Even in the spy shots, we could see that the LED running lamps up front were left intact, along with the unique grille shape and arched lower air intake openings.

AutoGuide reports that the car shown in Monterey will likely be a hybrid, though Lexus is expected to also offer conventional gasoline versions of the GS. A high-performance F variant is in the cards, as well.

Report: Obama Administration to ease CAFE standards on full-size trucks, SUVs

In response to automakers - in particular, the Detroit Three - crying foul over the Obama Administration's proposed CAFE target of 56.2 miles per gallon by 2025, the powers that be will reportedly ease standards for the fuel economy of future trucks and SUVs, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The WSJ reports that as part of an effort to break the stalemate between government regulators and automakers, the White House is considering a proposal that allows for the fuel economy ratings of full-size trucks and SUVs to improve at a lesser pace than required for passenger cars. Word is that small trucks, compact SUVs and crossover vehicles will still be required to meet the 56.2-mpg target, but even that seems open for debate. The report further claims that several proposals are in the works, with one calling for the fuel economy of small trucks and SUVs to advance at a rate of 3.5 percent per year, well below the five percent requirement for cars.

Government regulators hope to finalize a proposal by early next week and issue formalized rules by September.

Penny auction sites like QuiBids or Beezid that advertise $18 iPads and $15 laptops sound too good to be true, and some simple math shows that the sites end up winning big in the end. That isn't always the case, though - at least not when it comes to pony cars. CNN reports that Jonathan Mason of Michigan purchased a brand-new Bumblebee yellow Chevrolet Camaro SS for only $5.28 using the site Fastpennycars.com.

Amazing, right? Well, before you trip over your mouse on the way to the site, keep in mind that each bid of one penny costs 80 actual cents, and there were a total of 528 bids. Mason's Camaro only cost him $5.28 plus the cost of any bids, but the site collected $422.40 in overall bids. That's a far cry from a $31,000 Camaro, but keep in mind that Fast Penny Cars is a newer site, without a big following like QuiBids. On QuiBids, an iPod Touch will sell for $10, or 1,000 bids at 60 cents each, which is quite a deal for the website. Well, that was the case until this story broke. Fastpennycars.com is now so backed up with traffic, we couldn't even get to the homepage.

Kline Inaugural PIR Tour Modified Winner

Untamed Motorsports pulled into Phoenix International Raceway this past week fully prepared for Round Ten of 2011 Season Two of the NASCAR iRacing.com Tour Modified season. In the end, the team which focuses most of their time on the modified ranks on the online racing�service came out with three of the top five spots�with their team president taking the overall win. Shane Kline?s victory in the July 9th, 2541 sof race put the veteran sim racer�to the top of the board for Week Ten with 159 points. Kline led 64 of the 75 laps at the one mile track and won the event by two and a half seconds over teammate Paul Wisniewski.
